TERM 1 2012

Beginner - Intermediate Courses

Circus Essentials
Stilts Essentials
The place to start!
This is the class most people start with to get a bit of a taste of everything. This is primarily a ground based class but you will be given an introduction to Aerials. Like all our classes, Essentials begins with games and a warm up which includes stretching and conditioning exercises. Most weeks you will do some Acro-balance, basic Tumbling and intro to Handstands (don’t panic!). Other activities you will be introduced to include Hula-hooping, Juggling, Chinese plate manipulation, Stilt-walking and Poi-twirling. All activities are optional and we encourage participants to work at their own pace and to their own goals and limitations. For some activities you may be divided into groups based on experience/ability.
The great thing about circus (like women) is its diversity. We know from experience that in circus there is something for everyone and a way for everyone to shine. Some skills you will pick up quickly and others you will need to chip away at but this class is a great way to explore and discover your strengths and interests.
Complete beginners, all fitness levels Mondays
6:30-9:30pm
20 Feb - 16 April
(8 weeks - 1 week Easter Monday)
$249/209*
Wednesday Aerials
Trapeze Aerials Class

These are basically the same class, though Saturday is usually a smaller class so naturally you may get more individual attention in that class.
Both classes are suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate. You will be divided into smaller groups based on skill level and rotate around the activities. Generally the activities are Tissu, Trapeze and Conditioning. Usually you will also be given an introduction to Cloud and Lyra sometime over the term (see glossary).
We recommend that absolute beginners start with Circus Essentials before progressing to Aerials. This allows you to build some strength and body awareness so that the transition to Aerials is safer and less taxing for your body. If you are absolutely convinced that Aerials is for you, and especially if you have a physical background (eg. gymnastics / dance / yoga / pilates etc.), it may be fine to go straight into Aerials. Please give us a call if you are unsure or would like to discuss.
Recommended at least one term of Essentials or equivalent first. Ask us if unsure. Wednesdays

Circus Fit
Fire Class
This is a conditioning and body awareness class designed to compliment your skill based class(es). Circus can be physically demanding, especially if you haven’t done much physical activity for a while. Aerials in particular asks a lot of your body and, while we do some conditioning in all classes, there is not the scope in the skill based classes to focus on the finer points of your physical development. Aerials tends to build up the large muscle groups you need to support your body weight but often your smaller supporting muscles don’t develop at the same rate which can cause problems, even injuries. In Circus Fit you will work on building these supporting muscles, core strength and stability and learn how to do conditioning exercises correctly. Circus Fit trainers are trained Physiotherapists, Feldenkrais practitioners and/or Yoga teachers.

GLOSSARY

Trapeze - A traditional aerial apparatus resembling a swing. Can be static or swinging; at Vulcana we do static trapeze.

Tissu
– aka Aerial Silks/Curtains/Fabric. Long reams of fabric which is used in a similar way to rope. It can be wrapped around the body and used to create knots and loops which support the body in space. There are various types of fabric which can be used. In Australia we tend to use microfibre which is very strong and lightweight and has a great deal of give, making drop tricks more ‘comfortable’ (it’s all relative!).

Cloud – A cotton padded rope which is hung in a loop creating a cradle which can be used in similar – and different – ways to trapeze. Cloud can also be swinging or static.

Lyra – aka Aerial Ring/Aerial Hoop. A metal ring rigged from a single point, often with a swivel which allows it to rotate. Generally considered *#@! painful until you get used to it (or get used to bruises). Like Tissu (and ballet) the prettiest things are often the most brutal.

Acro-balance – the art of humans balancing on each other. There are duo, trio or group balances. Duo balancing is sometimes referred to as Adagio. The most recognisable acrobalance is the ‘human pyramid’ but there are literally thousands of balances possible with only two people. Most balances have at least one ‘base’ and one ‘flyer’ but there are some balances which are symmetrical (both parties play a similar role).

Conditioning – Strength building exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups etc.
