Circus Exchange 2021

Vulcana partnered with Hurricane Stars, Multicultural Australia, and members of the Vulcana community, Vulcana supported culturally and linguistically diverse women from Islamic communities across Brisbane in a program of circus-based activities. This program not only built confidence, group cohesion and explored new physical opportunities in a safe environment, but also created a cultural exchange by providing meaningful exchanges between women from these communities.

Vulcana consulted with Dr Huma Kanwal from Centre for Islamic Thought and Education, to support us to continue to engage Muslim women and young people through circus.

“It was something that I never considered in my whole life, circus is in the movies...but then this was awesome...in a comfortable environment for me to try something new.”

“I was surprised by what a community it was as soon as I came in...I feel stronger, and just better, and more confident as well.”

“I’m so incredibly grateful for your patient, kind and playful guidance and the chance toappreciate what my body can do rather than how it constrains how I perceive myself and navigate the world more than I have in years (same for all the instructors and Vulcanistas, and Hurricane Stars for being such kind encouragers and partners in joyful movement).”
